Kat, since I hang out on the WTM classical boards, I first saw it mentioned there, over and over, until I finally purchased DWC. I think drawing ability would be great to have for CM-inspired nature journals! The few places/blogs I saw this mentioned I think also were into CM and/or classical. I am not to the point where I hang out on CM forums, but here are a few other resources that may be helpful, I still need to read them all myself!

http://www.squidoo.com/drawingwithchildren (documents using DWC)
http://www.squidoo.com/drawingwithchildrennature (different than first)
http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/dwclp.htm (Free DWC Lesson Plans!)
http://homemade.truepath.com/nature2.htm (she uses DWC with her 5 year old)

I've heard great things about that book! I have Artistic Pursuits on the way (after being underwhelmed by Art Adventures at Home), I wouldn't mind picking up DWC also.
