Kate, I totally agree, in fact we are taking a break from the HWT books this fall. I am very glad we went through the PreK/K books fairly fast, as she already was writing her capitals and starting to learn lowercase on her own, I did not want bad habits to be ingrained so early. She totally loves to handwrite letters to people and sometimes does it all day long! So in a way, she is practicing an hour a day on her own, lol. Some days she’d wake up and ask to work on her handwriting book first thing. We’ve seen so much improvement, I would not have done the first two books any other way.

Once lowercase is learned, I do plan to slow things down and review/practice more. As mentioned on the curriculum page, we’re taking at least a month, or perhaps wait until first grade to start the First Grade book. We will be taking the rest of the workbooks much slower.

I do not want to start official copywork practice until we have gone through all our lowercase letters, which will be sometime later this month. After she is pretty confident in writing them all correctly (and won’t ingrain bad habits), then we’ll start copywork and work on getting them look nice. I have the StartWrite software with the HWT font, and using our favorite books to practice writing sentences out of them, can’t wait!
