One of the homeschooling forums I hang out on brought up this recent article – “Home-schooling: Socialization not a problem”. Whether you are just starting to think about homeschooling or are years into homeschooling, and get the nagging question about how you’re going to “socialize” your child, this is a great article to show them!

The first myth whether parents can adequately teach their own children – has shown that “homeschoolers, on average, outperform public school peers” – 37 percent higher on standardized tests in fact. I think for the most part, people already know that homeschoolers excel on average.

The second myth is frustrating for us homeschoolers to constantly address – regarding lack of socialization. Well now, the first of the homeschooled graduates from the late 80′s and last decade are now proving they are succeeding as adults. In the study, home-educated adults were more socially engaged, had higher average income, and used no government assistance. “In all areas of life, from gaining employment, to being satisfied with their home-schooling, to participating in community activities, to voting, home-schoolers were more active and involved than their public school counterparts”.
