Aren’t they a beautiful couple?

After meeting for lunch in Boulder, we then went to Evergreen, CO to do some geocaching around their beautiful lake.

It was their first time. I gave them both a nice GPS device so they could hunt down the “catches” (as Justin says). Some were harder than others, but we found all 5 that we searched for!

I think they were thinking romantic shots, as I caught this after Justin and Senaca together solved the cache “No Making Out”.

First up is the lake that welcomes you into Rollinsville from the north. There’s a Peak to Peak cache with this roadside view. I’ve taken many photos of this place, this time I am obviously focusing on the clouds and sky.

Next on to Nederland. The “Welcome to Nederland” cache compels you to check out the big Steam Crane sitting in town.

Then onto the welcome sign. Our first micro (about the size of a business card holder) was hidden somewhere in there.

Heading down the mountain to Boulder is “Cassie’s Cache”, a dog-lovers cache. Satori loved this stuffed animal dog, and we left a roll of doggie poo bags and a doggie treat.

The next day we took our truck and tried out some jeep trails behind our house. The views were magnificent.

Boogity Boogity Boogity took us awhile, as our iPhone GPS wasn’t being accurate, but luckily I did save the details on my iPhone and found that it was near a latrine, so that helped tremendously.

Mom then saw a pile of rocks that didn’t look natural and that was it. We left this Diabetes Travel bug, a panda figurine, and toy squirt gun.

Then on to Tommyknocker’s Cache! Luckily mom knew what a tommyknocker was and knew exactly where to look. I am glad I brought Dad out, after determining there were no bears or mischievious tommyknockers lurking inside, he quickly grabbed it! Our first cave, how exciting…

Satori took a toy snake, she loved it so much it slept on her pillow that night. We left the usual – a panda and some other toy trinket. I’ll intend to figure out some creative stuff to leave in caches, but I do think those pandas are cute.

We are still new at this and were using my iPhone with my newly purchased GroundSpeak Geocaching app on it to narrow in on the cache. It always said that it had a 56 feet accuracy, so we haven’t been able to get an exact location, but that is the other fun of it, who can spot the cache first! Usually they are hidden under rocks, twigs, and camouflaged pretty well.

David started pining after a good old mechanical compass which he thought would help him tremendously. After 15 minutes or so, he’s the one that found the cache. And his prize was a compass of all things! We left this $100 Travel Bug we found at the Peak to Peak Travel Bug Hotel the night before. (Too bad the $100 isn’t real!)

We also left a panda figurine and sport bubbles. Can’t wait to visit the two other ghost town geocaches!

Earlier in the day, I took advantage of our local Playfair Toys and got a member’s discount of half off their party favors! I stocked up so that we will always have a little trinket especially for kids in geocaches. But being myself, I will probably be brainstorming some more original and unique geocache treasures…

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

So today I loaded up my profile I made last year and found a couple that are just a few miles from our house. I told Satori we were going to hunt for treasure! The first one we found very easily, next to the mountain stream running through Rollinsville, a picturesque place with snow-capped mountain views, the occasional train rushing by, and a verdant meadow.

The next one was supposed to be for kids and super easy, but we did not find it. Instead, Satori found a broken bottle, and, thinking that was the treasure, she attempted to dig it out of the ground and cut her finger! We’ll try again later this week. Daddy is home this week, so we’ll wait for him to join us!

Here’s a peek at our geocache we found, a relatively large one, they can be very small and hard to find. Inside was a notebook so we could sign in our names and the date we found it, and say what we took and what we left. We left a piggy-flashlight keychain and took a shiny plastic egg.

Satori is very psyched about our next Geocaching adventure! I hear there is an app for the iPhone, I may get that… Today I used my Garmin Forerunner 305 watch, which I usually use when hiking.
