I finally succumbed and purchased a portable backdrop set. It’s been about a year since I’ve wanted one so with the birth of my two nephews Brady and Beckett, I think now is the time. While waiting for passport photos at Mike’s Camera, I spontaneously purchased the backdrop stand, and black muslin sheet. Then headed to Jo-Anns, and got a plush black blanket.

I have been learning photography for just over a year now and probably need to challenge myself a bit more. We have a photography studio, professional lights at the warehouse, but portability is more fun. My backdrop stand and muslins will pack up neatly in carrying cases, and I’ll be using equally portable speedlights (or natural light) for the lighting. Now, just need to practice!

Here’s a picture I “snapped” very quickly just to test the black muslin background with Satori and natural lighting from our kitchen window. I told Satori to look toward the window, and not smile.

It is a very dark, dreary, rainy day so I pumped up the ISO to 1600, as I wasn’t going to use lighting. The shutter speed was still too slow for my hand-held quick snap, even though I opened up to my len’s full f/2.8. If I did this again, I would increase the ISO even more, try an f-stop of 4 and take my time. 🙂

Can’t wait to try the new backdrop on two baby twin boys!

It’s been awhile since our last rowing, but we’ve been reading The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer. This is actually a FIAR vol 3 book, and we’ve only done volume 1 so far, but I couldn’t wait to row a book about animals. It will complement our history studies well as we’re also learning about amphibians and an intro to the animal kingdom this month!

I actually got this idea from another FIAR blogger, Sweet Blessings. Check out her cute “salamander room”!

Satori actually now has two rubbery salamanders, and they’ve been quite the hit! She took them to her cousin Peyton’s and two other 2 year old girls had a blast playing with the amphibians. We got them in the sale bin at Michaels craft store for just $2 each. Since I can’t find them, here’s a link to another cool Salamander – Spotted Salamander. Ours were just what we paid for though, the paint is flaking off, but we think they were still totally worth it.

We’ve been to the library to research amphibians and both Satori and I learned a lot.

We’ll take about two weeks on the Salamander Room, as we want to coordinate the rowing with nature hikes at our local ponds and the emergence of our new pet butterflies!
